Boxer Alicia Ashley mellows with age
Not very often a Jamaican sets a record that is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.
So when Alicia Ashley became the oldest female boxer in history to win a major boxing title in October, she became a worthy nominee for the RJR Sportswoman of the Year award.
Ashley, who became 48 years old in August, defeated the previously unbeaten Christina McMahon of Ireland for the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight title with a unanimous 10-round decision with scores of 100-89 and 98-91, 98-91. She had beaten her own record when she won the title from Christina Ruiz at the age of 43.
Ashley, with a ring record of 23 wins with four knockouts, 10 defeats and one draw, dominated McMahon and scored the bout’s lone knockdown in the eighth round with a straight left hand that sent McMahon falling into the ropes.
The Jamaican southpaw, who started boxing 16 years ago, followed that up with a dominant ninth round and almost scored a second knockdown with three sharp jabs.
Ashley began fighting in martial arts and eventually transitioned into amateur kickboxing at the age of 27 before transferring her talent into the traditional boxing in 1999.
Ashley, known as ‘Slick’, was the recipient of the Chairman’s Award at the RJR Sports Foundation’s National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year gala last year.
However, Ashley is the only boxer nominated in both the female and male category for the awards for 2015, where she will be competing against reigning Sportswoman of the Year in swimmer Alia Atkinson and six contenders from athletics.
No female boxer has ever won the award started 54 years ago in 1961, but Ashley, for regaining her world title and setting a Guinness Book World Record, could upset the apple cart and be crowned Sportswoman of the Year in another record-breaking feat in Jamaica’s history.
