UWI squander lead against Humble Lion
After a miss there is often a hit, and that is exactly what played out for University of the West Indies (UWI) FC when they failed to put away Humble Lion and had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their Red Stripe Premier League match at the UWI Bowl yesterday.
Girvon Brown had given UWI a 23rd-minute lead via the penalty spot, but just seconds after substitute Jerondy Henry missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 in the 85th minute. Humble Lion snatched a point as Horace Sharpe headed home in the 86th minute for a share of the points.
In the end, it was probably a deserved result as both team squandered chances, but UWI, who dominated the first half and led for so long, seemingly left the more disappointed of the two teams.
UWI inched to 23 points, the same as Reno, but eighth on goal difference.
UWI Head Coach Marcel Gayle was fairly satisfied at game’s end.
“It ended up being a fair result. I thought we dominated the first half and I think Humble Lion took over the second half, and it just showed the quality of the league,” said Gayle.
Humble Lion, with their point, consolidated fourth spot on 29 points, but failed to make significant inroads on the leaders, sitting eight points adrift.
“In the context of the game, we have to be thankful for the point. Both teams got a lot of chances [in] a game of two halves. They could have put away the game in the first half, but we came back strong in the second half,” said Humble Lion Coach Vassell Reynolds.
Meanwhile, Portmore United opened up a three-point lead atop of the standing on 37 points following their comprehensive 5-1 whipping of FC Reno at the Juici Park in Clarendon.
Javan East netted twice, in the 33rd and 45th minutes, with Michael Binns (22nd), Paul Wilson (43rd) and veteran Kevin Deerr (82nd) completing the rout.
Afiba Chambers replied for Reno in the 45th minute as they stayed in seventh spot on 23 points.
