RIU Resorts invests US$57.5m on Caribbean upgrades
ON Thursday, marketing and resort company Sunwing Vacations disclosed that RIU had spent about US$60 million on upgrading three regional properties, including the RIU Negril which received a makeover valued at US$20 million.
Riu Negril in western Jamaica unveiled its new look in November featuring what Sunwing describes as completely redesigned public areas including the lobby, pool and gardens, two restaurants and a children’s playing area along with an amplified pool complex with new waterslide.
Riu Negril is one of four Riu properties in Jamaica. Others are in Montego Bay, Runaway Bay, and Ocho Rios.
Riu Playacar, fresh from a US$32-million redo, opened its doors in October in Mexico. The all-inclusive hotel now features new pools, guest rooms and solarium terrace, as well as remodelled bars and restaurants, new kids’ pool and updated spa and gym facilities.
The last to open after what Sunwing describes as a “contemporary refresh” priced at US$5.5 million, is Riu Lupita located two kilometres from the centre of Playa del Carmen in Mexico.
Lupita, which was reopened in December for the first time as an all-inclusive hotel, has a restyled lobby and the bathrooms across the 300 rooms have been enlarged and completely reconfigured, replacing the bathtub with a walk-in shower. Lupita also added an Italian restaurant, bringing the dining options to four.
