Medical reminders for the holiday season
THE holidays are in full swing. However, there are a few medical reminders that we must all observe to have a safe and enjoyable season.
1. Do not forget your chronic medical illnesses: Please be reminded to take your medications on time as usual, and if you are leaving home make sure you have enough medication to cover the holiday period.
2. Do not overeat: Watch the amount of Christmas cake and sorrel that you consume daily. Being high in calories, the pounds from these tasty foods will approach fast and furious.
3. Do not forget to exercise: Find some time to include some physical activity, even with your busy schedule.
4. Do not forget your medical appointments: It is common to miss or want to procrastinate on regular check-ups because it’s Christmas; this will only result in further complications of manageable illnesses, so be reminded to keep your dates.
5. Do not forget allergies: It’s a time where eating at relatives become the norm, so you need to be mindful of the ingredients in their food. Check before eating. Also, wear a bracelet to indicate the types of allergies and bring along your EpiPen always.
6. Avoid alcohol intake and driving: Designate a driver who does not drink, as alcohol impairs coordination, reflexes and judgement. This will only lead to accidents and deaths which, most times, are avoidable.
7. Don’t forget to rest: As much as the season is to be enjoyed, don’t forget to get some well-needed rest and relaxation to recover from all the partying involved in the Christmas season.
8. Buy age-appropriate gifts: Don’t forget to buy gifts for kids that are appropriate, for example, gifts that won’t result in parts being swallowed or could cause choking.
9. Do not “watch” illnesses: Although it is the holidays, illnesses may pop up. Don’t put off getting help in the middle of the Christmas season as this may result in avoidable complications
10. Avoid being overly stressed: Although a time where meals have to be prepared, gifts have to be bought, families have to travel and be entertained, it is important to reduce undue stress. Don’t overdo the festivities so you forget to relax and enjoy the season.
