Price aims to get it right
Head coach of Boys’ Town FC Andrew Price was a happy man on Sunday after being granted an early Christmas desire when his team defeated UWI FC 2-1 at the Barbican Stadium.
The ‘Red Brigade’, with goals from Andre Dawson and Rafiek Thomas, pulled off a much-needed victory which has propelled them to 25 points and into sixth position for the first time this season heading into the Yuletide break.
The Collie Smith-based team, currently at home at Barbican pending the completion of renovation work at their home facility, started the day in seventh position on the 12-team standings on 22 points, same as their opponents.
And after surrendering a first-half lead, the three-time league champions fired back to secure all three points to end on a high, much to the delight of Price.
“Well we really wanted to finish the year on a high note and it was all about getting the three points today (Sunday) — it wasn’t the prettiest of victories, but I think that we stood out there and we fought valiantly,” Price told journalists in a post-game session.
“UWI is a good team and they are constantly improving and they looked the part so we had to really dig deep to get the three points today. But our team was hell-bent on finishing the season on a high note and, being that they were on the same amount of points like us, we wanted to win this game to separate ourselves from them,” he continued.
Boys’ Town have been known to finish with a flurry late in the season, and with the team now in mid pack and well set heading to the break, Price is anticipating a positive showing from his team come next year.
The tactician is optimistic that the return of key players Daemon Benjamin, Xavian Virgo, Carlos Wright, captain Michael Campbell and goalkeeper Kirk Porter will boost the team in their aim to remain consistent.
“Well, when you look at the team we have a lot of injuries currently… right now a lot of our front line players are not available because of injuries, so it is good to see that we have some depth that we can still come out here and battle with a team and get three points,” Price noted.
He added: “Hopefully in the new year we hope to get back people who weren’t available; all those players were missing today and the team still found players to go out there and execute and get three points. So it augurs well for the future and depth of the team and we want to use this as a launching pad that we can be consistent in 2016.
“We are going to take it one game at a time because it is about accumulating points until the end of the third round and see where it leads us.”
Boys’ Town are set to kick start the 2016 campaign away to Cavalier SC, who are currently in the relegation zone on 18 points.
