‘Red Brigade’ march past UWI FC 2-1
Boys‘ Town Football Club will enter the Yuletide break on a high following a 2-1 victory over UWI FC in their Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) fixture at Barbican Stadium yesterday.
Andre Dawson gave the ‘Red Brigade’ a 14th-minute lead and Rafiek Thomas sealed the win with an 84th-minute strike. Girvon Brown had earlier pulled one back for UWI in the 58th minute.
With the win, the Andrew Price-coached team has moved provisionally into fifth position on 25 points, while the Marcel Gayle-coached UWI team remain in eighth position on the 12-team standings with 22 points.
In yesterday’s game, Boys’ Town started more purposefully and grabbed the ascendancy, albeit fortuitously, when a shot deflected off Dawson’s shoulder and flew past Leighton Donaldson in goal for UWI.
The hosts continued to look dangerous and thought they had extended the lead when Shamar Nicholson hit the net twice, but both were from offside positions and the score remained 1-0 at the break.
After watching Brown’s shot come back off the crossbar and Anthony Greenland finding the left upright from a one-on-one with custodian Leon Goffe prior to the break, the university men maintained a high tempo and were back on level terms 13 minutes into the resumption.
Jamie Robinson, with a well-struck left-footed shot from a distance, forced an equally brilliant save from Goffe, but the latter was left with no chance when Brown popped up to slot home from close range from the resulting corner.
Both teams pressed for the winner in the closing stages of the contest, with UWI seeming more likely to take all three points, but it was Boys’ Town who found the go-ahead goal late against the run of play.
Thomas held his composure while being hounded by Owen Hill and headed over the advancing Donaldson from a well-weighted long-pass from Garfield Gillespie.
