MBU warm up for Harbour View with big 10-0 win in St James Div 1 KO
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Montego Bay United warmed up for their Red Stripe Premier League game against Harbour View on Monday night by thrashing St James Division One team Copperwood 10-0 in a second-round Captain’s Bakery and Grill knockout game played at the UDC field on Friday.
Cory Hylton and Kashief Brown both scored hat-tricks while teenager Johann Weatherly scored a double for his first goals in a Montego Bay United shirt, while Jermaine Woozencroft and Lesly St Fleur — in his first game this season, got the others.
Montego Bay United and Fire House now advance to the quarter-finals where they will join Melbourne FC, Tomorrow’s People SC, Granville FC, Faulkland FC, Wadadah FC, and Reggae Youths.
At the UDC field on Friday, Hylton scored in the third, fifth and 68th minutes; Brown scored his treble in the 53rd, 70th and 82nd minutes; while Weatherly, who had his first RSPL start on Monday in a win over FC Reno, scored in the 65th and 83rd minutes.
St Fleur, who missed the entire first round of the RSPL and just returned to the island recently, marked his first appearance with a goal in the 48th minute, while Woozencroft, who is working his way back from a hamstring injury, scored in the 80th minute.
In another game played at Albion, Fire House beat Senior League team Heights FC 5-4 on penalty kicks after they had finished 1-1 after regulation and extra time, as the second round came to a close.
Dave Drummond’s goal in the 38th minute had given Fire House the lead, but Michael Stewart equalised for Heights FC in the 70th minute as the teams had to use penalty kicks to decide the winner.
On Thursday, holders Montego Bay United Under-21 were knocked out in the second round, beaten 5-4 on penalty kicks by Western Confederation Super League outfit Wadadah FC at the UDC field.
The teams had finished regulation and extra time tied at 1-1, with Ajai Black’s last-minute equaliser keeping Wadadah FC in the contest after Alrick Ottey had given Montego Bay United Under-21 the lead in the 21st minute.
Also on Thursday, promoted Senior League team Faulkland FC upset Western Confederation Super League team Montego Bay Boys Cub 4-2 with a hat-trick from Jourdaine Fletcher, while Orandy Anderson scored all four goals as Reggae Youths knocked out Violet Kickers 4-0.
At Jarrett Park, Fletcher led a Faulkland FC comeback after they trailed 0-1 after 28 minutes when Glenroy Williams scored the first of his brace. Fletcher levelled the scores in the 49th minute before Williams restored Boys Club’s lead in the 68th.
That lasted only 11 minutes before Fletcher levelled the scores for Faulkland FC in the 79th minute, Christopher Stone gave Faulkland the lead for the first time in the 81st, and Fletcher completed his hat-trick in time added on.
At Albion, Anderson scored in the ninth, 40th, 72nd and 80th minutes for Reggae Youths in a romp over Violet Kickers, who they replaced in the Western Confederation Super League.
