Lazer sharp performance at Mas Camp
Major Lazer and Friends lived up to its billing on Friday night at Mas Camp in St Andrew, as the three-man electronic dance music producers filled their performance with an all-star cast of unbilled artistes.
“It’s easy to get people to come to our show here in Jamaica,” Diplo, one third of the trio, told The Jamaica Observer.
Now in its fourth year, the headline act took the stage with such energy that minutes into their set they experienced a power failure, which was soon corrected; and had things back on track.
It was a show from start to finish: screens flashing the group’s signature animations, flames, streamers, rags thrown into the crowd, and confetti. Major Lazer found time to bring Sean Paul, Nyla, Jovi Rockwell, Tarrus Riley and Chronixx, as they ran through their extensive catalogue of hits, collaborations, and remixes for the more-than-willing EDM fans.
“We’ve established a proper fan base here in Jamaica, which is why we love coming every year,” said Diplo.
Major Lazer was backed by a local and international line-up of EDM stars, with Shane ‘Firestarter’ Graham kicking things off. Chromatic took a more dancehall tone, leading into the first international act of the night, Martin Garrix.
“I’ve been looking forward to the show since I knew I was coming,” Garrix explained.
His set started off with a piano rendition of his hit Animals before mixing in a steady stream of popular EDM hits all the way to the end of his performance.
“I loved the response, but most of all the positive vibe that is unique to Jamaica was there. I can’t wait to be back,” he said.
For promoter, Kamal Bankay, who did double duties — working behind the scenes and putting in a performance on the turntables — the event was a clear success.
“I am so happy and humbled as it was everything I dreamed it would be,” he said.
Bankay is already thinking ahead for 2016, promising it will be bigger and better.
