UWI look to continue climb up RSPL table
Promoted University of the West Indies (UWI) FC will look to continue their climb up the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) ladder when they travel to Barbican Complex today to face Boys’ Town FC.Kick-off is slated for 3:00 pm.
UWI, once languishing in relegation danger, are eighth in the RSPL standing with 22 points from 17 matches.
The university team’s record of three wins and a draw in their previous five outings represents the best current run in the competition.
At the start of the season, Head Coach Marcel Gayle had said the main goal was avoiding the drop. But this surge has propelled the first-time Premier League entrants into the middle of the pack, ahead of a number of seasoned teams.
Boys’ Town also have 22 points, but they occupy seventh place — above UWI — due a superior goal difference.
For Boys’ Town, it has been a season riddled with inconsistency so far, but recent indifferent performances by some of the teams higher up the table mean the Andrew Price-coached outfit is still within striking distance of the top four.
In an encounter that is sure to heighten pulse rates, Tivoli Gardens FC and visitors Arnett Gardens FC butt heads at Edward Seaga Sports Complex, beginning at 3:00 pm.
Title-holders Arnett Gardens, coached by Jerome Waite, are third with 29 points, while the Christopher Bender-conditioned Tivoli Gardens are ninth with 19 points.
Tivoli’s unusual position near the foot of the 12-team table means the tie is arguably not as attractive as in the past. However, there is always a lot to play for when the South St Andrew-based team travels to the home of their arch- rivals in West Kingston.
At the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon, fourth-placed Humble Lion FC (28 points) welcome second-placed Portmore United (31 points) in a 3 o’ clock start.
Also at 3:00 pm, sixth-placed FC Reno (22 points) entertain 11th-placed Rivoli United (16 points) at the Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland.
In the late afternoon game, which is set to get under way at 5:00, 10-placed Cavalier SC (17 points) take on fellow strugglers Waterhouse FC at the Stadium East playing field. Waterhouse, perennial RSPL challengers, have endured an extremely shocking campaign so far and wallow in last place with 14 points.
In the live televised Monday Night game, leaders Montego Bay United (33 points) visit Harbour View Mini-Stadium to battle the fifth-placed former champions, who are on 24 points, in a fixture that, in theory, befits sponsors Red Stripe’s flagship showpiece. The game is scheduled to commence at 8:40 pm.
