Westmoreland doctor on fraud charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Detectives attached to the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch on Wednesday arrested and charged a medical doctor for breaches of the Larceny Act.
He is 36-year-old Jepthroy Thompson of Big Bridge district, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.
Reports are that between June 2013 and October 2014, Thompson submitted claims for payment to a health insurance agency stating that surgery was done on several individuals with the assistance of a particular anaesthetist and an assistant surgeon.
On the basis of these claims, the insurance company paid out J$4.9 million to Thompson.
However investigations disclosed that the named anaesthetist and the assistant surgeon did not participate in any of the surgeries and were not beneficiaries of any money paid to Thompson. A report was subsequently made to the Fraud Squad in September 2015, which resulted in him being charged following a probe into the matter.
He is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 to answer to charges of obtaining money by means of false pretence, forgery, uttering forged documents and demanding money by means of forged documents.
