Pig farmer on murder rap gets bail
A young pig farmer, who allegedly stabbed and killed a man during a dispute last month, was yesterday offered $300,000 bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Twenty-two-year-old Andrew Grey of Riverton City in Kingston was arrested and charged with the murder of 21-year-old Delando Morgan after he turned himself in to the police four days after Morgan died.
The police are alleging that Grey and Morgan had a dispute when Grey left the scene and returned with a knife that he used to stab Morgan in the neck.
Morgan was rushed to the Kingston Public Hospital where he underwent surgery, but later died.
A statement from an alleged eyewitness stated that Grey was seen chasing Morgan, and Morgan was later heard screaming.
Following the alleged incident, Grey left the scene and surrendered to the police four days later with his attorney CJ Mitchell.
Yesterday, when Grey appeared in court, the prosecutor told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that the police were objecting to bail because of threats of reprisal killing.
Grey’s attorney, however, urged the magistrate to admit his client to bail, while expressing confidence about his safety.
“We are saying that he will be safe and sound,” Mitchell said.
The lawyer then told the court that his client acted in self-defence.
The magistrate however, told Mitchell that she was concerned about a part of the allegations which stated that Grey had left and returned with a knife.
Mitchell, in response, said that there was no truth to that report.
“There was no leaving and no coming back,” Mitchell said.
He then told the court that his client had no previous conviction and the magistrate subsequently accepted his bail application.
Grey was granted $300,000 bail and the matter was scheduled for mention on February 12 of next year.
