Four held in T&T murder of cop, UWI student
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Police say four people are assisting their investigations into the murders of a police officer and a University of the West Indies (UWI) student who were gunned down in Aranquez, on the outskirts of the capital here, early Monday.
Police have identified the victims as Constable Russell Ramnarine, 24, and 22-year-old engineering student, Avery Keshwar.
Media reports said that Ramnarine and a colleague were responding to a robbery in the area and were in the company of Keshwar when the alleged suspect was spotted.
The suspect fled and while the officers gave chase, Ramnarine, who joined the police service in October last year, later returned to the motor vehicle where the student was still seated.
The reports said that unidentified gunmen then opened fire on the occupants of the vehicle, killing them.
Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams has since extended condolences to the families of the police officer and the student.
Nearly 400 people have been killed here so far this year.
