Vijahn bashes ‘Heathens’
Reggae singer Vijahn said he is recording music that will empower listeners and be relevant years to come.
“My music is about reality. My main objective is to liberate one’s mind through music so persons can be aware and make conscious decisions in order for the world to be a better place,” he said.
This, he says, is evident in his latest single
Heathen. Released earlier this month, Vijahn said the single is a direct hit to those who are envious and greedy.
“This song reflects what is going on in society. It is about people tearing down and fighting against each other for the simplest of things. We need to change that frame of mind,” he said.
Heathen is produced by John Samuels of Tabbath Production.
Vijahn, whose given name is Anthony Edwards, spent his earlier years in the Rock Hall community of Portland. Growing up in a Christian home, he first showcased his talent in the church and at school concerts.
A graduate of Titchfield High School, the entertainer said he had harboured aspirations of becoming a doctor.
“I wanted to make my grandmother proud. My heart was moved by how hard she had to work as higgler in Coronation Market (in Kingston) to make ends meet. However, music had different plans for me,” he said.
In 2000, using the moniker Bones, he entered the
TVJ Reggae Trail contest and placed second.
Four years later, after embracing the Rastafarian faith, he released his debut single called
Wonderland for Home Run Productions. This was followed byMr Bigman andBattlefield.
In 2006, the singer said he got his breakthrough via the single
Black Flag.
“I got the chance to perform in several cities in the United States and the Caribbean. I even graced the stage of some of Jamaica’s biggest shows, including St Mary Mi Come From and Stars in Action,” he said.
Fast-forward to 2015 and the 31-year-old said he is taking it to another level, where he is currently working on new releases with Mikey Chung. Among them are
Move to the Baseline which made it to the top ten of the 2015 Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Festival Competition.
He is also promoting other singles such as
Higher Realms andSomething About You.
