Alvaranga leads JAMZZÂ at ASATT Invitational championship
The seven swimmers representing under the banner JAMZZ were in 16th position on the 39-team medal table with one gold, one silver and one bronze courtesy of the outstanding Zaneta Alvaranga at the end of day two on Friday.
Alvaranga registered her first podium finish on Thursday’s opening day when she finished a close third in the Girls’ 9-10 50m backstroke. She clocked 36.92 seconds, behind winner Kimberly Ince (36.00sec) and Aza Dunwoody (36.28sec).
Earlier, Karci Gibson just missed a spot on the podium when she finished fourth in the 11-12 Girls’ 400m freestyle with Sage Sinclair a close fifth in the 13-14 Girls equivalent. On the boys side Jordane Payne finished fourth with Chester Adams a close fifth and Adrian Grant finishing ninth, all in the Boys’ 13-14 400m freestyle event.
Payne and Adams were also fifth and seventh respectively in the 200m butterfly event, with Payne’s time of 2:25.85 minutes being a Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) B qualifying mark.
The Jamaicans also started positively on Friday’s second day with Kacy Grant (1:26.33 minutes) of Blue Seals Swim Club and Jomo McMayo (1:28.81 minutes) representing Tornadoes Swim Club finishing eigth and 12th respectively in the Boys’ 8 & under 100m freestyle.
Alvaranga then set the Jamaican camp alight when she clocked 1:07.33 minutes for second in the 9-10 girls’ equivalent, beating Ti-Juana Welch (1:07.81) for silver, behind Dunwoody who won in 1:06.91 minutes. Alvaranga’s performance also saw her lowering the Jamaican National Age Group Record of 1:08.32 set by Allison Bardowell back in 1997.
Karci Gibson (1:06.15) and Kyle Sinclair (1:03.57) followed up with seventh and eighth-place finishes in the girls and boys 11-12 event. Payne (59.70sec), Adams (1:00.12) and Grant (1:01.36) earned ninth, 13th and 17th place finishes respectively in the boys’ 13-14 equivalent.
And Grant despite finishing 13th in the 11 & over 200m breaststroke, achieved a personal best time of 3:04.46 minutes, while Adams was ninth in 2:55.28 minutes.
The afternoon then shifted into high gear as Alvaranga seeded second in her pet event, the 50m butterfly took a strong field to school when she clocked a fast 31.15 seconds to produce another Jamaican National Age Group Record. She won ahead of Dunwoody (33.59sec) and Zoe Anthony (33.74sec) to achieve the time which was also below the Trinidad & Tobago national age-group record of 32.50 seconds set by Kimberly John Williams back in 2004.
Gibson followed with a personal best time of 33.49 seconds for eigth in the 11-12 girls’ equivalent, while Kyle Sinclair (34.19sec) was 16th in the boys’ age-group event. Sage Sinclair (35.21sec) was 19th in the girls’ 13-14 event, with Payne, Adams and Grant finishing 16th, 25th and 31st respectively in the boys’ equivalent.
McMayo had earlier earned a sixth-place finish in the Boys’ 8 & under event with a time of 45.39 seconds, while Grant (55.85 sec) was 18th.
