Rivoli, Boys’ Town in exciting RSPL draw
Cory Burke scored his league-high 11th goal of the season, but crucially missed a penalty as Rivoli United had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Boys’ Town in their Red Stripe Premier League match at a wet Barbican field yesterday.
Burke netted in the 51st minute with a deflected shot from just outside the box that wrong-footed goalkeeper Kirk Porter. Then six minutes later, he saw his tame penalty kick well saved by the Boys’ Town custodian.
Rivoli United then paid the price as Boys’ Town stole a point courtesy of the outstanding Adrian King, who fired past the onrushing goalkeeper Marlon Henry in the 79th minute for a share of the points.
Both teams wasted chances to win the game late and improve their positions in the table, leaving themselves perilously close to the relegation zone. Boys’ Town inched to 19 points, provisionally into seventh spot, while Rivoli United slipped a spot to 11th on 15 points.
Rivoli United Coach Harold Thomas was visibly upset after his team failed to make it two in a row. “A good point, but very, very disappointing. When you have a team 1-0 up then get a penalty, then give up an easy equaliser, you have to be very disappointed,” Thomas lamented.
Meanwhile, Boys’ Town Coach Andrew Price, as usual, bemoaned his team’s profligacy in front of goal. “We have not been concentrating for the entire 90 minutes, and because of that we are giving up too many goals.
I thought we played a good first half (and) we got a lot of opportunities and we didn’t convert, and it almost came back to haunt us when Rivoli took the lead, but we showed character and fought back,” said Price.
