Cavalier, Montego Bay United slip despite draw
CAVALIER SC, battling to come out of the relegation zone, put on another encouraging performance under lights in their home game against second-place Montego Bay United in the Red Stripe Premier League at Stadium East on Monday night, but succeeded only in forcing a 0-0 draw.
In Monday night’s game neither Montego Bay United nor Cavalier SC actually benefited from the 0-0 result in terms of upward movement on the points table. Montego Bay United slipped two points behind leaders Portmore United, who are on 28 points, while Cavalier have fallen down the standings, dropping one place to 10th from ninth on 14 points.
Only Waterhouse, 11th on 13 points and Rivoli United on 11 points in 12th position, are sitting lower in the 12-team championship.
Cavalier Head Coach Rudolph Speid, though encouraged by his team’s performance, was left unfulfilled with the final result.
“All aspects of the game are very important, and as you are well aware, to come away with the best result possible; a win was what we failed to achieve,” he said.
Leonardo Neiva, his Montego Bay United counterpart, was largely satisfied with his team’s performance.
“The match for us was not so bad because we drew away from home; of course, we came here to win, but they had the better chances to score. Be that as it may, I am satisfied with the performance of my team. Football is like that, we pressed, pressed a lot but failed to score after having more possession, but we were just not being penetrative enough to produce a better result on the night,” said Brazilian Neiva.
There was consistent play throughout between the teams. However, it was Cavalier who got the best breaks to score after striker Chevon Marsh twice got into advantageous positions, but on both occasions, failed to convert in one-and-one situations with Montego Bay goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett in the 73rd and 81st minutes.
Montego Bay United, too, had their sights on goal in both halves, but Cavalier were unyielding in defence.
