Murray double catapults Dinthill into D’Cup final
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Rodave Murray was once again the man of the moment as Dinthill Technical rallied to clip Manchester High 2-1 in extra-time yesterday and advance to the final of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup competition.
Murray, the driving force behind Dinthill’s season, missed a penalty after seven minutes at Juici Park, but redeemed himself in the best possible way to lead his team into the championship game.
He notched the equalising free-kick in minute 43, before latching on to a through ball to score the winner in second half of stoppage time.
The Linstead-based school now await the winner of the St Elizabeth Technical-Lennon High semi-final, also scheduled for Juici Park today, in next week’s finale.
And Coach Anthony Patrick was full of praise for his match winner. “He is a wonderful player and we are happy to have him in our team,” he said of Murray.
Manchester, hunting their second appearance in a schoolboy final this season, had opened the scoring here in south-western Clarendon when Jarvis Mattis placed a well-taken free-kick around the wall after 28 minutes.
But, even though they remained in the contest until the last minute, that was basically their most telling attacking contribution.
They were worthy opponents in the first half, but were kept at arm’s length in the second stanza as Dinthill went ultra offensive.
As expected, Murray was the protagonist, keeping his markers busy with movements all over the pitch.
One of his early runs almost proved fruitful after he was brought down in the box with just about seven minutes gone on the clock. He stepped up and struck the resulting penalty onto the right upright.
While it did not seem to shake his or his teammate’s confidence, it did spur Manchester into action and they made their next attack count.
Given a free-kick on the edge of the area, Mattis lined up with teammate Romaine Walsh over the ball. But it was the former who took responsibility and duly side-footed hi effort around the wall and into the bottom corner of the goal.
It took Dinthill a while to respond, but when they did it was in similar style. Murray placed a casually, but ingenious free-kick past Manchester goalkeeper Nicholas King.
And it was no surprise that the little number seven was again on hand to slot in his 27th goal of the season, beating the advancing King with another delicate, but lethal shot to his right.
