Coaches exude confidence ahead STETHS-Lennon semi-final clash
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — STETHS will continue their quest for the rural area schoolboy double when they meet Lennon High in the second semi-final of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup competition at Juici Park today.
Game time is 2:30 pm.
The winner of this contest will play Dinthill Technical in the final, after the St Catherine team edged Manchester High 2-1 in extra-time yesterday.
And STETHS, having already secured their sixth-straight hold on the Ben Francis Knockout title following a 4-1 beating of Manchester High last Friday, will start as favourites against a Lennon team that they defeated 3-1 in the inter-zone round.
But Coach Omar Wedderburn said: “We don’t see ourselves as the favourites, we see ourselves as just another team trying to make to the final.
“This is the semi-final of the daCosta Cup, which means there are no more weak teams left in the competition. So we are not looking to the final until after this game. Because, as I always say, semi-final is the hardest game.”
Despite not taking his opponents for granted, Wedderburn did say the STETHS camp is overflowing with confidence.
“We are very confident, but we also have respect for our opponents, so we will go out there and give our best,” he said.
Interestingly, his opposite number Merron Gordon, who is also professing confidence, said losing to STETHS in the inter-zone was probably a good thing.
“For the first time I can actually say losing to a team really helps,” said Gordon. “We saw where our strength is and what we need to work on.
“And since that defeat we put in a lot of work and you can see that we have been improving.
“Even though we lost to Manchester High (in the Ben Francis semi-final), everybody could see that we are playing good football. Hopefully we can get the result part of it right (today).”
And despite being underdogs in today’s match-up, Gordon said the beaten 2010 daCosta Cup finalists are “very confident”.
