Wolmer’s, MoBay, Immaculate, Campion win tennis titles
WOLMER’S Boys’, Montego Bay High, Immaculate Conception, and Campion College each crowned themselves champions in the 2015 Access Financial Services Limited/ Proven Wealth high school tennis championship which ended at the Piccadilly Road facility on Sunday.
The four-day team tournament provided pulsating tennis from the over 300 players representing 43 high schools in front of a fair-sized tennis crowd.
It was excitement all the way, especially in the Boys’ Under-19 final between defending champions Hillel Academy and Wolmer’s Boys’, which had to be decided in the seventh match. Wolmer’s upset Hillel 4-3 to win the tie.
The doubles pair of Damani Cain and Mark Hardy rallied strongly to win five straight games to beat defending champions Hillel’s pair of Aman Chantani and Ruben Pinchas 7-5.
Winning Coach David Sanguinetti said he was nervous when they trailed 2-5 in the deciding doubles, but said the players kept their cool after each break.
“The win was heartbreaking and they did well to come out winners. With the scores tied at 5-5 Wolmer’s took it from there onwards,” said a delighted Sanguinetti.
Losing Coach Ryan Russell said the match should have been wrapped up easily as the players had the opportunities with a 5-2 lead.
“They got a bit nervous, produced too many errors and allowed Wolmer’s to fight back into contention,” Russell.
Meanwhile, Montego Bay retained the Girls’ Under-19 title with a convincing 4-1 win over Immaculate Conception.
Campion College defeated defending champions Hillel Academy 3-2 in a thrilling encounter to retain their Boys’ Under-15 crown.
Defending champions Immaculate Conception retained their Girls’ Under-15 title with a 4-1 win over St Andrew High.
