MBU, Portmore in top-of-the-table clash to open round two of RSPL
Leaders Montego Bay United (MBU) and second-placed Portmore United will meet in a top-of-the-table clash at Juici Park at 3:00 pm to highlight the start of the second round of the Red Stripe Premier League today.
In the other games, Boys’ Town tackle Harbour View at Barbican Complex at 3:00 pm; FC Reno travel to Humble Lion for a 5:00 pm kick-off; Waterhouse take on Rivoli United and Drewsland; and champions Arnett Gardens play the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Mona Bowl at 3:00 pm.
MBU will be under a new coach in Dr Dean Weatherly, who for the umpteenth time, will be filling the gap at the club following the resignation of American Timothy Hankinson.
The St James outfit is on top of the points table with 24 points after winning seven of their 11 games, and with their only defeat coming at the hands of Portmore United, revenge is certainly on the cards.
The promoted Portmore United are second on 21 points and will be confident of repeating their 2-0 win. Both teams are hunting their third-consecutive victory, setting the stage for an epic battle at the Juici Park in Clarendon.
Having scored a league-high 25 goals, which is nine more than any other team in the league, MBU will be hard to contain, especially with leading goalscorers in Dino Williams sitting pretty on 10 goals from 11 games, and Owayne Gordon on seven goals.
But Portmore United have the tightest defence, conceding just seven goals from their 11 matches and will be hard to beat. It should be a tough encounter in which the leaders are fancied to avenge their only defeat of the season.
Meanwhile, champions Arnett Gardens travel to the Mona Bowl hoping to put their inconsistent form behind. Last year at this stage Arnett Gardens started their winning run, rattling up 10 straight victories on their way to the title, and Coach Jerome Waite will want to kick-start the second round on a positive note.
Arnett Gardens are fourth on 17 points, while the improving UWI are 10th on 12 points and will be looking to avenge their 0-4 mauling in their first match in top-flight football.
Third-placed Humble Lion on 18 points take on a faltering FC Reno, down in eighth spot on 14 points, at the Effortville Community and should be able to secure three valuable home points in their push towards the top. FC Reno won the first encounter 1-0, but have found winning hard to come by and have not won in their last seven games
The struggling pair of Waterhouse and Rivoli meet at Drewsland in a bottom-of the-table clash, in which both teams will be aiming to climb out of the relegation zone. They are both on 10 points and are desperate for points.
Former champions Harbour View, in seventh spot on 14 points, play fifth-placed Boys’ Town on 15 points in what should be another intriguing encounter at the Barbican Complex. They battled to a 1-1 draw in the first round, but the momentum seems to be with the Collie Smith Drive players who have won three of their last five games.
On Monday, sixth-placed Tivoli Gardens on 14 points tackle ninth-placed Cavalier SC, sitting two points behind on 12 points, at the Stadium East field scheduled for 8:40 pm.
