D’Cup champs eliminated at quarter-final stage
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — daCosta Cup holders Clarendon College will play no further part in schoolboy football this season after they were eliminated from semi-final contention despite beating Rusea’s High 2-0 in their last quarter-final game yesterday.
To advance to the semi-finals, Clarendon College needed to beat Rusea’s by two clear goals and hope that parishmates Glenmuir High at least held Dinthill Technical to a draw in their game at the Wembley Centre of Excellence.
That encounter ended with Dinthill beating Glenmuir 3-0, which was good enough to top the group on seven points and advance to the semi-finals.
Clarendon College, who got their goals from captain Siegel Knight and Joel Sterling, finished their campaign on six points, the same as Rusea’s, while Glenmuir ended without a point at the bottom of the group following three successive defeats.
Incidentally, the results also mean that both Clarendon College and Rusea’s were eliminated from Ben Francis Cup contention, as only the top four daCosta Cup teams will take part in that competition.
Rusea’s ended the game with 10 players after Ronaldo Thompson, who was already on a yellow card, was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for striking Sterling.
