MBU look to stretch lead atop RSPL
FORMER champions Montego Bay United are virtually assured of top spot when Round One of the Red Stripe Premier League wraps up tomorrow, but they are expected to try closing off with a bang when they travel to St Ann today to face Rivoli United at the Drax Hall Complex.
Play is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
Montego Bay, who were losing RSPL finalists last season, lead the 12-team league table with 21 points from 10 games with a goal difference of 13. Their closest rivals Portmore United and Humble Lion FC — are both three points behind, but are unlikely to catch them since the pair have a goal difference of only two.
While Montego Bay, who have lost only once so far, are flying at the top, Rivoli have endured a tough first round, crammed uncomfortably in ninth place on 10 points.
Rivoli have lost their previous three RSPL outings and are looking down the barrel of a fourth-consecutive defeat unless they can lift their game a few notches, combined with the possibility of finding Montego Bay in a complacent mood.
In a clash of top-four teams, second-placed Portmore United welcome title holders Arnett Gardens to the Juici Park field in Clarendon at 3:00 pm. Portmore, currently using Clarendon as their base, have recorded five wins, three draws and two losses for their 18 points.
Arnett Gardens, the fourth-placed team, have 17 points, which includes five wins, two draws and three losses.
At Barbican Sports Complex in St Andrew, eighth-placed Boys’ Town FC (12 points) welcome sixth-placed FC Reno (14 points) in a game scheduled to start at 3:00 pm.
At the Drewsland Stadium at 3 o’ clock, hosts Waterhouse FC will try to put their RSPL title chase on track, but they will not have it easy against Humble Lion FC.
Waterhouse, the former national champions and perennial contenders, are wallowing in last place with seven points after losing three of their last five games.
Humble Lion (18 points), in third place only because they have hit the back of the net one fewer time than Portmore, are in good form, evidenced by their three-game win-streak.
At the Mona Bowl in St Andrew, 11th-placed University of the West Indies FC (UWI), on nine points, entertain fifth-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (14 points) in yet another 3:00 pm kick-off.
The final match day 11 encounter will be played tomorrow to end Round One when Cavalier SC host Harbour View FC in the 8:40 pm RSPL Monday night fixture at the Stadium East playing field.
Cavalier are struggling in 10th place with nine points, while former champions Harbour View are seventh with 14 points. Though neither is nowhere near the leaders, given the array of talent in both squads, some entertaining football is expected.
