Ref collapses in affair that sends MBU top
TUCKER, St James — Montego Bay United regained the top spot on the points table in the Red Stripe Premier League yesterday after a harder than expected 3-1 win over cellar dwellers Waterhouse at the Wes Pow Park in Tucker, St James.
Dino Williams continued his impressive goalscoring run with his 10th, to secure the victory, after Donovan Carey got his first goal of the season to give Montego Bay United the lead and Owayne Gordon got his sixth goal of the season.
The winners improved to 21 points, three more than Portmore United.
The game was overshadowed by the collapse of referee Raymond Bogle, who had to be rushed to a medical facility after he was unresponsive to medical attention on the sideline.
Bogle was knocked over by a player near the centre circle and got back to his feet with a smile, but a few minutes later he bent over in obvious distress. He was attended to on the field and was then taken to the sideline where his condition appeared to worsen and he was then taken to a medical facility by an ambulance that was on the compound, accompanied by the Montego Bay United physician Dr Alvin Wong.
At the end of the game, word got back to the venue that Bogle had recovered and was doing better.
The game was played under cool conditions but it was the home team that got off to a hot start when Carey sent them in the lead in the 15th minute when he smashed a shot from close range past goalkeeper Shannon Barclay.
Kenroy Howell gave Waterhouse some hope in the 45th minute when he beat goalkeeper Romaine Bowers with a curling shot from about 12 yards.
Ottey, who replaced Gordon in the 75th minute, almost set up a third Montego Bay United goal when he led a counter-attack from his own 18-yard box to the other end before trying to pick out Williams with a curling pass, but the ball eluded the striker.
Williams was not to be denied, however, when he turned nicely between two defenders on the right edge of the penalty box, then he dribbled across the area before beating Barclay at his left post with a low, hard left-footer.
