STETHS hammer Vere in daCosta Cup
MONTEGO BAY, St James — It will go down to the wire to see which four teams will qualify for the semi-finals of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition with one round of quarter-final games to be played next Wednesday after only former champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) managed to win a second game yesterday.
Michael Kerr scored a hat-trick as STETHS hammered Vere Technical 6-2 in Santa Cruz to go to six points in Group R and a point against Mannings on Wednesday would be enough to see them through to their seventh straight semi-finals.
Rusea’s High came from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Dinthill Technical in the featured game in Linstead in Group S as both are tied on four points each, one more than defending champions Clarendon College who eliminated Glenmuir from contention with a 2-0 win.
All four teams in Group P are tied on three points each after St James High beat Lacovia High 1-0 and Manchester High beat Paul Bogle High 3-1.
In Santa Cruz, three red cards were issued as STETHS finished the game with nine players after Romeo Wright, who scored two goals, and Neville Martin were sent off. Vere Technical’s Javier Bryan, who came on as a substitute, was also sent off.
Kerr’s hat-trick brought his tally to 10 goals since the start of the Inter-zone round, while Wright got two and Shawn Genus the other.
Ronaldo Thomas and substitute Michael Lindsay scored for Vere Technical who had won their opening game last week and are tied with Manning’s School who beat Marcus Garvey Technical 2-0 with both goals coming from Erran Vassell.
At Dinthill in Linstead, the home team got off to a fast start and led 2-0 before Rusea’s High pegged them back to draw level at 2-2. Dinthill then went ahead again but the Hanover-based school would not let up and salvaged a point.
Rodave Murray scored twice for Dinthill to take his tally to 11 goals since the start of the Inter-zone and Leonard Hibbert got the other while Tavon Barnes, Kristoff Young and Zachary Atkinson scored for Rusea’s High.
St James High shook off back-to-back losses to peg back Lacovia High 1-0 at Jarrett Park with second half substitute Malique Campbell scoring the winner in the 81st minute of the game that saw 10 minutes added at the end of the second half.
St James High’s goalkeeper was injured early in the second half after he took a boot to the chest from a Lacovia player and had to get assistance from medical personnel.
Hosts Manchester High also rebounded from a loss last Wednesday to beat Paul Bogle High 3-1 with goals from Jarvis Mattis, Bobitto Stewart and Romaine Walsh.
Lennon High scored the first win in Group Q, beating Seaforth High 2-0 at York Oval with two goals from Travis Grant. Lennon are on four points.
The other game between Petersfield and Port Antonio — both on one point each — was called off because of a waterlogged Carder Park field.
