Knight scores twice as CC eliminate Glenmuir
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Captain Siegel Knight scored a superb brace as daCosta Cup champions Clarendon College revived their semi-final hopes with a 2-0 victory over parish rivals Glenmuir High yesterday at Juici Park.
Knight shot Clarendon into a lead with one of his trademark long-ranged strikes in minute 36 and won the game in the 82nd with a brilliant solo effort.
But even though the result would suggest a routine victory for the Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-conditioned side, they actually had to weather some early Glenmuir storm while playing with a man short.
They went down to ten men in the 26th when midfielder Ronaldo Walker was shown a second yellow card.
And by that time they could have been trailing 0-2 had Glenmuir, who also hit the post in the 39th, converted their chances inside the first 15 minutes.
Alas, the Patrick ‘Jackie’ Walters side were left to rue those missed opportunities as this defeat means they have been eliminated from title contention with one round of games still to be played in the quarter-finals.
Glenmuir are rooted at the bottom of Group S without a point from two games, while Clarendon (three) moved to within a point of joint leaders Dinthill Technical and Rusea’s High, who played out an exciting 3-3 draw in Linstead.
The results set up a mouth-watering finale in the group, with Rusea’s and Dinthill travelling to Clarendon next week to face Clarendon College and Glenmuir, respectively.
Davis, whose side entered this contest on a two-game losing skid, said: “We needed to rebound and, this being a big derby game, the players really turned up today.
And the win, he said, is a “big, big boost” for their confidence heading into the Rusea’s game.
