‘We plan to play until at least December 3’, says Lennon coach
MOCHO, Clarendon — Lennon High School coach, Merron Gordon, says winning the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup title is always the aim, but he admits it will be difficult this season.
The beaten 2010 finalists dropped two crucial points in their opening quarter-final game on Tuesday, following a 0-0 draw with Port Antonio High at home. They, however, remain firmly in the hunt for a semi-final spot after Petersfield High and Seaforth High ended 1-1 in the group’s other game.
That result means Lennon are currently in a four-way tie in Group Q, on a point apiece, though with a slightly inferior goal difference.
“From the get go, we planned to play until at least December 3 (daCosta Cup final), because this is not really a young team. I would say they are a bit immature, but they aren’t young,” said Gordon.
“They didn’t leave the zone last season,” he added, “so I came back this year and did some work with them. Now we are in the quarter-finals and I’m starting to wonder if the players might be feeling self-actualised.
“I hope they are not, because we are trying to push them to go even further,” he said.
But with their two remaining games taking them to St Thomas and Westmoreland to face Seaforth and Petersfield, respectively, Gordon admits they are in for a rough ride.
“With only one team (from each group) going through (to the semi-finals), it was always a difficult task, but we have put ourselves in a situation now where we will have to win our next games on the road,” he said.
Gordon added that his players might also be lacking the big game mentality. “Because as the games go by you start to see the jitters and they are not looking as confident in their eyes as you’d want them to,” he said.
“But such is the game. And these are youngsters, so we just have to hope that they come good each day,” Gordon said.
