St Jago, JC cruise into Super Cup semis
ST Jago High powered their way into the semi-final of the ISSA/Flow Super Cup with a convincing 2-0 win over St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) at the National Stadium yesterday.
In the feature game of the double-header, defending champions Jamaica College defeated Excelsior High 2-0 to keep alive hopes of retaining their title.
The outstanding Ryan Smart netted both goals in the 43rd and 57th minutes as the boys from Monk Street in Spanish Town actually won easier than the scoreline suggests.
Smart converted a 43rd-minute penalty after the impressive Shaqon Bryan was fouled in the box, then he slotted home 14 minutes later after a solo run from Kirk Samuda.
It wasn’t the most exciting of games, but it was clear St Jago had a little bit more to offer and STETHS had problems coping with their fluid attacks down the flanks in the first half of a dominant display.
The half couldn’t have come at a better time for STETHS as they could have been out of the game by then.
The Flow dancers and the half-time music were clearly more enticing for the approximately 5,000 spectators with entertainer and St Jago past student Chris Martin in attendance, although he did not perform.
It took STETHS until the 54th minute to register a shot on goal as Michael Kerr’s powerful effort from just outside the penalty box forced a block by goalkeeper Akeem Chambers.
The St Jago ‘keeper was called upon once again a minute later when he had to leave his line in a flash to thwart a STETHS attack.
But just when STETHS were getting into their strides, Smart scored on the counter-attack for his second goal following a piercing cross-field run from Samuda, who teed him up nicely.
It was a cruel blow to STETHS, as they were just coming to grips with the marauding Monk Street boys.
Much to their credit, STETHS went on the offensive in search of goals, and brought on Alex Thompson and Shemar Smith, and they were actually more dangerous with a couple of close tries.
But in the 75th minute, St Jago almost went further ahead as a corner kick by Jovan Thomas was pushed into the crossbar by STETHS’ goalkeeper Sanjay Ferguson.
STETHS’s Aldane Barrett brought the best out of former National Under-17 goalkeeper Chambers with a rasping left-footer that was brilliantly parried behind for a corner in the 82nd minute.
In the end, St Jago, coached by former Jamaica College standout Glen Laing, advanced comfortably and continued the dominance of the Corporate Area schools in this knockout competition.
