Upsets galore as D’Cup quarter-finals begin
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Dinthill Technical High shocked defending champions Clarendon College 2-1 on a day of upsets as the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition got under way yesterday.
Just one of the three ISSA/Flow Super Cup quarter-finalists — St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) — managed a win as Glenmuir High were also ambushed 3-2 by Rusea’s High at a muddy Jarrett Park, while underdogs Lacovia High also beat Manchester High 2-1.
Dinthill Technical’s quest for their first title since 1981 seems to be back on track after a big win over Clarendon College, snapping the champions’ 12-game unbeaten run all season in all competitions.
The prolific Rodave Murray and Leonard Hibbert scored for the Dinthill Technical, who are joint leaders with Rusea’s High in Group S on three points each.
At Jarrett Park, Dushane Beckford scored twice as Rusea’s High came from a goal down to beat Glenmuir High 3-2 to end their 10-game unbeaten run.
Javon Barnes got the other goal for Rusea’s High, who led 3-1 midway the second half before a late rally by Glenmuir, who were travelling to Montego Bay for the second time in a five-day span and playing in heavy underfoot conditions.
The game that was played in muddy and waterlogged conditions started 20 minutes late, due to a heavy shower that started about an hour before the scheduled 3:00 pm start.
Kevon Lambert gave Glenmuir the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after a Rusea’s defender handled the ball in his area.
Beckford, however, levelled the scores, also from the penalty spot in the 26th minute after he was fouled by goalkeeper Paul Beckford.
Rusea’s then took over the game in the second half with two goals in a five-minute span that turned the tide.
Barnes sent them to the front for the first time in the game when he beat goalkeeper Paul Beckford to the far post with a shot from the right flank in the 60th minute.
Five minutes later, Beckford was picked out just inside the Glenmuir area with a lofted pass and ran away from two defenders to beat the Glenmuir goalkeeper with a low, hard shot.
Substitute Leroy Bryant gave Glenmuir some hope of salvaging at least a point when he finished off a good move in the 86th minute, but that was as close as they got.
Romero Wright, Shawn Genus, Neville Morgan, and Michael Kerr scored for STETHS as they beat Marcus Garvey Technical 4-2 at Drax Hall to take the lead in Group R on goal difference over Vere Technical, who beat the Manning’s School 1-0 at Wembley in Clarendon.
Paul Bogle High edged St James High 1-0 to be joint leaders in Group P on three points, while Petersfield and Seaforth drew 1-1 at Frome, as all four teams in Group Q are on one point each after Lennon High and Port Antonio had drawn 0-0 a day earlier.
