Race for daCosta Cup semi-final round heats up
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Defending champions Clarendon College and six other former winners will start their quest for a place in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition and a place in the Ben Francis KO as well when the quarter-finals continue today with seven games all set to start at 3:00 pm.
Clarendon College are in the very competitive Group S that will also see Rusea’s High and Glenmuir High meeting at Jarrett Park.
Only the winners of the four groups will advance to the semi-finals and this will most likely lead to hard fought games where every point will be worth its weight in gold.
Today three schools that won their first-round games in the ISSA/Flow Super Cup on Saturday — Clarendon College, Glenmuir High and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will also be seeking to keep their winning steaks intact.
Of the three only STETHS had a perfect inter-zone round, winning all three games and will travel to Drax Hall to face Marcus Garvey Technical in a Zone R game.
Based on Saturday’s come-from-behind demolition of Charlie Smith in the Super Cup, STETHS will start favourites in the game and also to win the group that also sees Vere Technical meeting Manning’s School at Wembley in Clarendon.
The Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached Clarendon College are unbeaten all season and with Joel Sterling back to fitness could have the edge over Dinthill Technical at Clarendon Park.
After stumbling late in the first round and just getting through the inter-zone after an 11-0 drubbing of Islington High, Dinthill will be confident of returning to the semi-finals for a second straight season with striker Rodave Murray in spanking form with eight goals in the inter-zone round, including six against Islington.
Glenmuir showed some guts to come from two goals down to beat Kingston College 3-2 in their first round Super Cup game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday and will take that form to Jarrett Park against Rusea’s High who have been resting since last week Tuesday when the inter-zone ended.
Glenmuir have cruised all season but their defence will be tested by a Rusea’s team that pumped in seven against a hapless Herbert Morrison Technical on Tuesday.
Deshane Beckford, Javon Barnes and Kristoff Young will lead the Rusea’s attack, while Glenmuir who will be making a second trip to Montego Bay in five days, will hope Kevon Lambert, Chase Myrie and Warren Simpson can lead them to a win.
St James High are coming off a tough loss to Excelsior High in the Super Cup first round, bowing out on sudden death penalty kicks after missing a handful of chances in regulation time, and will hope to bounce back when they face Paul Bogle High at York Oval.
