Lennon, Port Antonio open quarter-final round with draw
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Lennon High and Port Antonio High battled to a goalless draw in their opening quarter-final game in this season’s ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup competition.
Home team Lennon will be the more disappointed of the two, however, after they failed to capitalise on the chances they created.
They came closest to a winner in the 80th minute when Shawayne Nelson’s closed-ranged header was brilliantly clawed away by Port Antonio goalkeeper Lavain Brissett.
Port Antonio were second best in this contest, but they also had a few look-ins at goal. However, their leading man, Javoy Belnavis, posed no genuine threat to the Lennon custodian.
This result means both sides are now the early leaders in Group Q on a point apiece. But that situation could be altered this evening, following the Petersfield-Seaforth match-up.
“It was a poor finishing day for us,” said Lennon coach Merron Gordon. “We dominated throughout and created enough chances to win by maybe three clear goals.”
But he added: “With only one team going through, it was always a difficult task, but we have put ourselves in a situation now where we will have to win our next game on the road.”
His opposite number, Marlon Hylton, was more satisfied with the point, especially with Port Antonio set to close out their quarter-final schedule with two home games.
“A point is not bad,” he said. “Now we have two games at home, so our fate is still in our hands.”
