Christian’s late winner guides Lion past UWI
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Humble Lion returned to winning ways in the Red Stripe Premier League, but needed a late goal to see off a resolute UWI FC 1-0 yesterday at Effortville.
Second-half substitute Jermaine Christian got the winner on the stroke of full-time after he tapped home Levaughn Williams’ low centre.
Prior to the goal, the hosts had wasted a number of chances, with Williams being the main culprit.
Newcomers UWI held their own in a keen contest, but being reduced to 10 players after Demo Schaffe was shown a second yellow card in the 78th minute, did not help their cause.
Anthony Greenland got their best chance early in the second half, but somehow managed to shoot wide from inside the six-yard box.
The defeat means they stayed in relegation trouble on seven points, while Humble Lion stayed in mid-table after improving their tally to 11 points.
“We needed this win, whichever way it comes,” said coach Linval ‘Pala’ Wilson.
The UWI coach, Marcel Gayle, thought his team lost concentration in the latter stages of the game, but claimed in the same breath “there are lots of positives that we can take from this game”.
