St Jago whip Lacovia 3-1
ST Jago High continue to demonstrate the value of paying attention to detail under coaches Glen Laing and Shavar Thomas to completely dominate Lacovia High by 3-1 in their ISSA/Flow Super Cup opener at the National Stadium yesterday.
In the late game, defending champions Jamaica College defeated Vere Technical 2-1.
As early as the second minute, the first run by St Jago on the Lacovia goal forced the rural team into deadly error. Lacovia skipper Sean Watson was caught out, and in attempting to clear a teasing centre from the by-line by the probing Ryan Smart, succeeded only in smashing the ball past his goalkeeper Andre Frater to put St Jago in front with an own goal.
This then set the tone for the entire first half, as St Jago continued their marauding runs and 28 minutes into the half the Monk Street boys’ leading goalscorer Shaqon Bryan made it 2-0 going into the break.
St Jago returned for the second half just as determined as in the first, but as the half deepened they allowed Lacovia back in the game and St Elizabeth boys pulled one back through Oshane Sharpe to half the score.
This rekindled life into St Jago, but Lacovia were game. However, two minutes into time added Andre Daley put the game out of the reach of Lacovia to the satisfaction of Coach Laing, who said: “We became a little overconfident at one point and Lacovia got a goal, but we always knew that we are the better team. So despite Lacovia’s industry, I was confident that we would go on to win.
“Thing is that there is an excellent surface at the National Stadium and we wanted to pass the ball around, and in so doing we seemed to drop our guard. But after the goal was scored, we went in search of another goal and it was good to get it,” Laing said.
His opposite number, Fitzroy Ambursley, was not too disappointed with the result as he thought his team played very well against a very good team.
“Had we been more accurate with our shooting, then the score could have told a different story. After going a goal down so early in the game, it was good to see the fighting spirit we displayed. We played very well, especially in the second half, and should have had better results than we did as we created several good scoring chances, but just did make better use of them,” he said.
