CC, STETHS lead qualifiers into D’Cup quarters
FROME, Westmoreland — Defending ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup champions Clarendon College and Ben Francis Knockout holders St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) lead the qualifiers for the Flow Super Cup competition as the inter-zone round of the daCosta Cup ended with the expected fireworks yesterday.
Petersfield High, Lacovia High, Port Antonio High, Vere Technical and Glenmuir High all won their zones and qualified for the cash-rich competition that starts on Saturday, while another eight teams all advanced to the quarter-finals after placing second.
Rusea’s High, Lennon, Manchester High, Marcus Garvey Technical, Dinthill, who hammered Islington 11-0, Paul Bogle and Seaforth will continue to compete.
Meanwhile St James High led Frome Technical 2-0 with less than five minutes to go when the game was blown off after a power outage at Jarrett Park. St James High needed only a draw to win the zone and if the results stand Manning’s School who beat Spot Valley High 5-0 earlier in the day would also advance ahead of Frome on goal difference.
Jevaughn Facey scored a hat-trick to lead Manning’s, who rebounded from their loss to St James High on Saturday, while Rodaine Smith got the other two goals.
Cornwall College were the biggest casualty yesterday after they were beaten 4-3 by Petersfield in their Zone One game at Frome, as Maliki Reid scored a hat-trick.
Cornwall College got to the venue late and were up against it going 0-2 down early in the game and despite fighting back late to draw to within a goal, it was not enough as they crashed out of the competition early for the second year running.
At Jarrett Park, Rusea’s High secured second place with a big 7-1 win over hapless Herbert Morrison Technical with three players — Deshane Beckford, Ronaldo Thompson and Kristoff Young all scoring doubles, with Javon Barnes getting the other goal.
At the St Elizabeth Sports Complex, STETHS, who were one of three schools to win all three inter-zone games, blasted deCarteret College 8-0 as Michael Kerr scored four times and Shawn Genus got three as the hosts topped Zone Three.
Lennon took the runner-up spot after beating first-time inter-zone qualifiers Alston High 4-0.
Surprise team Lacovia High won Zone Five on goal difference, despite losing to Marcus Garvey Technical 1-2 at Drax Hall, as both teams finished on six points along with Fair Prospect High who beat Annotto Bay 2-1.
Lacovia had the best goal difference of four, while Marcus Garvey had one and Fair Prospect minus one.
Daniel Green and Anthony Williams scored for Marcus Garvey, while Oshane Staple scored Lacovia’s goal.
Javoy Belnavis, Ramone Russell and Akiem Clarke scored for Port Antonio High in their 3-0 win over Brown’s Town to top Zone Six, while Dinthill Technical swamped Islington 11-0 for the runner-up spot.
Vere Technical won all three games in Zone Seven after blanking Ewarton 2-0 and will be joined in the quarter-finals by Paul Bogle High, who beat Denbigh High 4-0.
Glenmuir High drew 1-1 with Seaforth High as both teams advanced — Glenmuir to the Flow Cup with seven points and Seaforth will advance as runners up.
