UWI edge Boys’ Town 2-1 for second win in RSPL
THE University of the West Indies (UWI) registered their second win of the Red Stripe Premier League season when they edged Boys’ Town 2-1 at the UWI Bowl yesterday. Goals by Girvon Brown and Anthony Greenland in the 22nd and 45th minutes lifted UWI off the bottom of the table for the first time this season and into 11th spot on seven points.
Brown, who was Cavalier SC’s top scorer last season, pounced on a loose ball and fired home a right footer from just inside the box, before Greenland controlled a ball on his chest after a neat build up and calmly slotted past the advancing goalkeeper Kirk Porter.
Adrian King, who had headed onto the upright in the 59th minute, replied for Boys’ Town in minute 70 after young striker Shamar Nicholson was red-carded in the 60th minute for dangerous play. King fired home after the UWI backline was exposed once too often. Boys’ Town, who were losing their third match from seven games, slipped two places to the bottom in 12th place on six points. Andrew Peart, UWI’s assistant coach who was beaming from ear-toear, said his team showed that it belonged in top-flight football.
“For a change we were some goals ahead heading into the second half, but the game management in the second half wasn’t the best but the result at the end of the day is what matters,” said Peart.
“We are more grateful for the result than the performance and we need to collect three points at home no matter who we (are) playing against,” he added. Meanwhile, Boys’ Town’s coach Andrew Price was clearly a dejected man as he sat on the team bench after another pathetic display from his team. “I don’t think the heart and the desire were there today.
The team is very inconsistent and we have players in and out for varying reasons and you can’t seem to get the right combinations together, but we are going to continue to fight, it’s still the first round,” said Price.
He added: “This one really hurts, but guess what, it’s part of football and we just have to get ready for the next game.” Meanwhile, Harbour View conceded two very late goals to draw 2-2 with Montego Bay United at the WesPow Park. Jorginho James and Kevauhn Frater had given Harbour View a twogoal cushion with strikes in the 30th and 80th minutes.
But the home team salvaged a share of the points courtesy of Cordel Simpson in the 90th+1 and Owayne Gordon in 90th+4 minutes. Portmore United and Humble Lion battled to a 0-0 draw, while Rivoli United blanked FC Reno 3-1 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
