Port Antonio edge Islington 1-0
Port Antonio, Portland — Port Antonio High edged Islington High 1-0 in their ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup inter-zone Zone Six game at Carder Park on Saturday.
The lone goal was scored by Javoy Belnavis on the stroke of half-time.
Port Antonio started out attacking through Ramone Russell, Javoy Belnavis, Genoy Harrison, and Rohane Weir, but Islington High’s captain and central defender Jashawn Campbell broke up most of the attacks.
Islington sapped up the pressure and launched a number of attacks through Richard Henry, Maurice Wellington, Darriel Brown, and Jason Blake, but found the Port Antonio defence and custodian Lavain Brissett hard to penetrate.
Just before the half ended Port Antonio should have gone one up from the penalty spot when defender Leon Donaldson handled the ball and referee Delroy Williams pointed to the spot. The subsequent kick from 12 yards by Javoy Belnavis saw goalkeeper Dario Beckford moving right and pushing for a corner.
Ramone Russell’s floated corner kick ended in a goal mouth melee where Javoy Belnavis fired to the left of Beckford and off a defender into the open goal.
The second half saw both teams squandering a number of chances as Port Antonio were the main culprits.
However, it was enough for the victors to move to six points from two games.
Port Antonio will host Brown’s Town on Tuesday at Carder Park.
Winning coach Marlon Hylton was pleased with the victory and looked forward to moving on. “We got a number of chances and we didn’t take them and we got a lone goal and I gladly accept it and now we have to look forward to get a positive result from the Brown’s Town team to be zone winners and enter the Super Cup and into the quarter-finals.”
