Fireworks as Inter-zone round heads for climactic end
FROME, Westmoreland — Fireworks and climactic endings are expected today as the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup competition comes to an end with 16 games scheduled in the eight zones as teams seek places in the Flow Super Cup and the quarter-finals of the daCosta Cup.
On paper, fireworks could come in Zone Two where three schools, including former champions Cornwall College and Rusea’s High, as well as Petersfield High, are the contenders for the two places. In Zone Four Munro College and Manchester High are seeking to join defending champions Clarendon College.
Three other zones — Five, Six and Seven — could also have cliffhanger finishes as well with several teams all still in contention for at least a place in the quarter-finals.
The eight zone winners will qualify for the Flow Super Cup set to start on Saturday, while the top-two schools from each zone — 16 in all — will advance to the quarter-finals that will start next Wednesday.
The draw for the first round of the Flow Super Cup will be made on Thursday, matching the daCosta Cup teams with the Manning Cup teams for the first round.
Meanwhile, ISSA yesterday made adjustments to the starting times of several games, in an effort to “maintain the integrity of the competition”, according to George Forbes, Competitions Officer for ISSA.
The ISSA official also pointed out that the organisers held the right to change venues and times of the games.
At least three games will have direct bearing on each other — the Zone Two games featuring Petersfield against Cornwall College at Frome and Rusea’s High versus Herbert Morrison Technical at Jarrett Park. Also, the Zone Four games featuring Clarendon College against Munro College and Manchester High versus Spalding.
The triple-header at Jarrett Park will be moved up by an hour and the first game, Spot Valley High vs Mannings School, will start at 1:00 pm, followed by Rusea’s High versus Herbert Morrison Technical at 3:00 pm then St James High against Frome Technical at 5:00 pm.
The Kirvine double-header has also switched and will now see Alston taking on Lennon at 1:00 pm to be followed by Manchester High against Spalding.
Seven schools have already booked their places in the daCosta Cup quarter-finals and all need only a point to secure places in the Flow Super Cup competition.
Twenty-three schools enter the round with hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals, while 16 have real hopes of qualifying for the Flow Super Cup.
Zone Two has turned out to be the real ‘Group of Death’ with three teams in contention and all could end on five points each, and the tie-breaker in that scenario would be used to determine who move ahead.
Petersfield High and Cornwall College, who will meet at Frome, are tied on four points each, two more than Rusea’s High.
Rusea’s, however, are in the driver’s seat and are almost sure to advance and could ‘steal’ zone honours with a win over Herbert Morrison, if the Frome game ends in a draw.
The young Herbert Morrison team has barely fired a shot at goal in two games, while conceding four goals, and with little to lose, could be easy picking for Rusea’s who would go to five points.
Only one team from the game at Frome can advance and Petersfield need only a point to dump Cornwall College out of the competition.
Cornwall College had beaten Petersfield 2-0 when both teams met at the same stage last year and are unbeaten all season, but all that will count for nothing if they can’t produce a win today.
Despite creating numerous chances in their last two games, the Cornwall College offence has managed just one goal, in a 1-0 win over Herbert Morrison, who Petersfield beat 3-0 on Saturday.
In Zone Four, Clarendon College will win the zone with a draw against contenders Munro College who must win if they are to upset the defending champions.
Manchester High rebounded from their loss to Clarendon College on Wednesday to beat Munro College on Saturday and should beat Spalding High and book their spot.
At Jarrett Park, a draw between St James High (six points) and Frome Technical (four), would see both teams advancing to the next round. A win for St James High, however, would open the door for Mannings to advance ahead of Frome with a win over Spot Valley, who have conceded five goals in two games.
Lacovia High, one of the best third-placed teams from the first round, will hope their good run will continue when they take on Marcus Garvey Technical at Drax Hall where they need only a point to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Marcus Garvey and Fair Prospect who will play out of contention Annotto Bay, are both on three points and trying to get one of the two spots.
There is a possibility three schools could end up on six points each and goal difference will be used to separate them. Lacovia are well ahead so far with five goals for and none against and will have the odds in their favour to score a win and avoid the tie-breaker.
Zone Six is another group that could provide some drama where Port Antonio High need a draw when they face Browns Town who must win to move on.
This leaves a resurgent Dinthill Technical who could make progress with a draw against Islington and put their recent slump behind them.
Dinthill had gone four games without a win before beating Browns Town 3-0 on Saturday at Drax Hall and will have home field advantage today.
