Walsh scores twice to lead Manchester past Munro
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Manchester High revived their quarter-final hopes after a pair of free kicks from Romaine Walsh guided them to a 2-1 victory over Munro College in yesterday’s ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup inter-zone match in Mandeville.
Walsh, a powerful centre forward, got his brace in 28 first-half minutes after he wrong-footed goalkeeper Onandi McKenzie with a deflected effort for a 13th-minute opener.
He doubled the lead with a more precise shot on 41 minutes before Munro substitute Dageon Hall bundled home from a corner to halve the deficit on 68 minutes.
That goal inspired a gallant Munro fight back, but Manchester showed great resolve to eke out a crucial victory.
The win marks a positive response to their midweek loss against Clarendon College and, consequently, it has left Zone Four delicately poised with one round of matches to go.
As it stands, three teams are still in with a chance to make the quarter-final round, with title holders Clarendon College sitting in the driver’s seat on six points following their 2-0 victory over Spalding High at Kirkvine.
Manchester and Munro are next with three points each, while Spalding are out of contention after they suffered a second-successive defeat.
Winning coach Donovan Duckie said: “I thought they (the players) learned from the first game.
“On Wednesday they were too anxious, but today I thought they showed more composure. There were some anxious moments, especially after Munro scored, but they steadied their nerves to get a very good result.”
