Windies need to bat through sessions, says Bishoo
GALLE, Sri Lanka (CMC) — Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo says West Indies plan to use a measured approach to batting today’s third day of the opening Test, as they try to avoid any unnecessary slip-ups.
The Caribbean side finished the day on 66 for two in their first innings, in reply to Sri Lanka’s massive 484 all out at the Galle International Stadium.
“We have to bat smart, try to tick the scoreboard [over] and stick to the basics,” said the 29-year-old.
“We have to bat situation, ball by ball and you have to focus. We have to keep it simple and keep the strike [turning] over and take it session by session.”
Sri Lanka resumed yesterday’s second day on 250 for two and were driven by big hundreds from opener Dimuth Karunaratne (181) and Dinesh Chandimal (151).
The pair converted their overnight 149-run third wicket stand into 238 before being separated just before lunch when Karunaratne departed.
West Indies were guilty of sloppy fielding with four catches going to ground, and two of these coming off Bishoo’s bowling.
“It happens,” Bishoo said in reference to the missed chances of his bowling.
“I would’ve loved to get five or six wickets but at the end of the day, we have to work on that part of the game. In the innings we dropped a few catches but on a good day, things could have gone better. We have to work on it as a team together.”
He said the pitch was turning quite a bit and he had been forced to make some adjustments.
“It makes it a bit harder because sometimes the ball spins too much and then the wicket is a bit slow too so it’s not spinning with like pace on it,” he explained.
