Video: A Passage To India
There was once a time, albeit prior to the advent of the Northcoast Highway, when Sundays driving to Moneague for brunch at Café Aubergine and/or Ochi for dinner at Passage to India were par for the course. Both restaurants more or less moved to Kingston, chef/patron Anil Sud passed and that was it, really.
Imagine our delight when Andrew Salm, our Food Awards judge — seems judging for 2016 has already commenced — told us about Passage to India’s new location by the pier. There’s no time like the present and there’ s nothing quite like having a new credit card to try out. Thanks, Sagicor.
Anchored boats, a great view of Moon Palace Jamaica and pleasant trade winds made outdoors the perfect option for our Sunday jaunt. There is indoor dining, too. By the time our mango lassi, a popular traditional, yoghurt-based drink, had arrived we were in chill mode.
Restaurant manager Martel Wright takes our order of chicken tiki masala, mutton vindaloo, fish butter masala, aloo gobi, pishore nan. Basmati rice is ordered separately as are garlic nan and roti.
Conversation is easy with our special guests Stephen Mair, manager, mortgage sales and service and the beautiful Marsean Mullings-Thomas, a woman of extraordinary resolve who, although still mourning the recent loss of her husband of 16 years, carries on, taking life one day at a time and allowing Thursday Life to induct her into her least favourite food.
Breaking bread or roti to boot, travelling through our beloved country, making new acquaintances, taking time to appreciate the many blessings we so often take for granted are very much what our weekly tours are about.
We pause today to raise a toast to Marsean Mullings-Thomas, whom we left honoured to have met and who, might we hasten to add, enjoyed our menu suggestions.
