D’Cup Inter-zone round off with a bang
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Former champions Glenmuir High, Cornwall College, St James High, and St Elizabeth Technical were among the winners yesterday as the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition got underway.
Glenmuir High hammered Bog Walk High 5-1 at Juici Park, Cornwall College and STETHS got 1-0 wins, while St James High came from a goal down to beat Spot Valley High 2-1.
Kevin Lambert kept up his excellent scoring pace as he scored twice for Glenmuir High in their win, scoring in every game his team played this season.
Onando Collins, Warren Simpson and Chase Myrie also scored for Glenmuir, who took the lead in Zone Eight after Kemps Hill and Seaforth drew 0-0 in their game at York Oval.
Michael Kerr scored for STETHS as they edged first-time qualifiers Alston High 1-0 at Kirkvine, but Lennon High are the leaders of Zone Three after beating deCarteret College 2-0 at Juici Field.
At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College missed a number of scoring chances against a stubborn Herbert Morrison Technical, before Leonardo Murray’s 49th-minute goal made the difference between the Montego Bay rivals.
The game was held up for 10 minutes in the second half as the teams and officials had to wait for the floodlights to be turned on as natural light faded.
Cornwall College lead Zone Two after Rusea’s High had to come from behind to draw 1-1 with Petersfield at Frome.
St James High are the leaders in Zone One after Neil Clarke scored on either side of the break to give them a 2-1 win over a spirited Spot Valley High in the first game at Jarrett Park.
Rojae Bernard had given Spot Valley High a surprise lead after 19 minutes, but Clarke equalised in the 31st minute after a brilliant effort from Radcliff Dawkins, who dribbled through the Spot Valley defence to set up Clarke.
Clarke got the winner in the 53rd minute after his powerful shot beat goalkeeper Markino Baddal.
In the other Zone One game, Manning’s School and Frome Technical played out a 1-1 draw at Frome.
Munro College outscored Spalding High 3-2 at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz, while Lacovia High, one of the two best third-place qualifiers, crushed Fair Prospect High 3-0 at Carder Park.
Vere Technical handed Paul Bogle High their first loss of the season, winning 2-1 at York Oval, while Ewarton High scored a similar margin of victory over Denbigh High as the two are tied in Zone Seven.
Dinthill Technical, who started the season as favourites to return to the semi-finals, extended their winless run to four games as they were beaten 2-1 by Port Antonio High at Dinthill in Linstead.
Marcus Garvey Technical beat Annotto Bay High 1-0, while Brown’s Town were 2-1 winners over Islington High.
