Lead slips away from Portmore following draw
PORTMORE United were displaced atop the Red Stripe Premier League after they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Boys’ Town at the Barbican Field yesterday.
Portmore United, who started the day on top with 12 points, inched to 13 points, but slipped a spot to second behind Montego Bay United on goal difference, while Boys’ Town also dropped to 10th on six points.
Portmore Head Coach Geoffrey Hewitt was relatively pleased with the away point despite squandering a couple of very good chances late in the match to snatch maximum points.
“We just want to be as consistent as possible. We did not get three points, but we played on the road and got a point and we are very fortunate for that as well,” said Hewitt.
Boys’ Town Head Coach Andrew Price said his team failed to utilise the home advantage, despite using a Barbican field miles away from their original home ground at Collie Smith Drive.
“The improvement is that we didn’t concede any goals today (yesterday). To play a good team like Portmore and have a clean sheet is a step in the right direction,” Price noted.
It was an exciting game, but the visiting Portmore United will leave the encounter the more disappointed of the two teams having missed several chances and even saw a Ewan Grandison effort hit the base of the upright in the seventh minute.
Grandison, Paul Wilson, Kemar Phillpot, and Captain Omar Daley dominated the middle for Portmore United, despite the skilful Adrian King ‘s marauding and mazy runs for Boys’ Town.
With a few minutes left on the clock, Portmore brought on Rodian Jennings in the 90th minute and his impact would have been sensational, but his header was cleared off the line. Then seconds later Kareem Manning skied his effort from inside the box with virtually the last kick of the match.
