Inter-zone spots filled after set of rescheduled games
PETERSFIELD, Westmoreland — Petersfield High, Spalding High, and deCarteret College booked automatic qualifying spots in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup as all 32 places were filled after rescheduled games were played yesterday.
Petersfield High and Spalding High both scored wins in games they had to win to qualify, while deCarteret College qualified despite going down to Manchester High and were joined by Bog Walk High and Lacovia as the best two third-placed teams.
The inter-zone round gets underway tomorrow with 16 games, with the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four teams each playing three games, with the top-two advancing to the quarter-finals and the winners qualifying for the Super Cup.
In Zone D, Petersfield scored two goals late in the game to beat Godfrey Stewart High, knocking them out of contention and winning the zone with 16 points to join Mannings School (15 points) from Zone D.
Petersfield trailed Godfrey Stewart by a point coming into the contest, which had been postponed twice before, and were held up by the defensive tactics of the former champions. They, however, managed to score twice in the final five minutes of the game, the second goal coming from the penalty spot with almost the final kick of the contest.
Spalding High were in a similar situation where they, too, had to win and edged Holmwood Technical 1-0 at home after beating them 2-1 at Holmwood in the first round.
Spalding finished with 17 points, same as Alston High, but trailed by one on goal difference.
Despite losing 1-5 to Manchester High, who completed a perfect win record by winning all 10 games played, deCarteret College advanced as the runners-up after Mile Gully could only manage a 0-0 draw with Cross Keys.
deCarteret College finished on 17 points, two more than Mile Gully, and advanced to the inter-zone round for the first time since the 2006 season.
Dinell Stewart scored a hat-trick for Manchester High as they finished with 70 goals, the most scored by any team in the last 20 years, surpassing the 68 scored by Rusea’s High in 2011.
Ewarton High, meanwhile, repeated as winners of Zone K after a 3-1 win over Charlemont took them to 22 points, one more than former champions Dinthill Technical.
Bog Walk High, who were third in Zone K, got the nod as the best third-placed team in Pool I with a 1.8 average, while Lacovia High was the top third-placed team in Pool II with a 1.9 average.
The average is calculated by the number of points the teams won by in the number of games they played.
