Three jostle for Zone D Inter-zone honours
PETERSFIELD, Westmoreland — The two qualifiers for the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition from Zone D will be confirmed this afternoon after the playing of the final two games in the preliminary rounds.
Three schools, Godfrey Stewart High, Petersfield and Mannings School are in contention for the two spots, joining the 13 other schools who have already booked places.
Meanwhile, Marcus Garvey Technical who have already qualified can win Zone I with a win over Steer Town Academy in the other game scheduled.
Marcus Garvey, who had won the first round game 1-0, lead with 22 points, two more than Browns Town who have a better goal difference and who play York Castle (17 points), also contenders tomorrow.
In Zone D today, leaders Godfrey Stewart (14 points) need only a point from their game against Petersfield High (13 points) to ensure qualification, while a win would see them winning the zone.
Third-placed Mannings, who are on 12 points, will face Maud McLeod, who are out of contention, despite their best season in a long time after winning three games.
A win for Mannings would see them returning to the Inter-zone round for the first time since the 2012 season, irrespective of what happens at Petersfield.
Mannings, who have won their previous two games, had defeated Maud McLeod 1-0 in their first meeting this season and a repeat would be good enough for them to take the runners-up spot.
Petersfield High are coming into the game on the back of a 6-0 thrashing of Little London on Wednesday, but are limping to the line having lost the previous two games to Mannings and Maud McLeod and must win here today if they are to be certain of making of boasting back-to-back Inter-zone qualifications.
Godfrey Stewart, the 2005 champions who are also seeking to avenge a first-round loss, have not lost in their last four games and will come into this game confident of taking three points.
Teams already qualified for the Inter-zone phase are: St James High and Cornwall College in one A, Rusea’s High in Zone B, Spot Valley in Zone C, Manchester High in Zone F, Marcus Garvey Technical in Zone I, Annotto Bay in Zone J, Port Antonio in Zone L, Glenmuir High and Denbigh High in Zone M, Vere Technical and Kemps Hill in Zone N, Paul Bogle High in Zone O.
