Reno, Montego Bay in derby showdown; Tivoli, W’house clash
THE western derby between unbeaten FC Reno and Montego Bay United at Frome in Westmoreland is the marquee match-up of the five Red Stripe Premier League games on today. Match time is 3:30 pm.
In the games set for 3:30 pm Boys’ Town take on Portmore United at the Barbican field; Waterhouse FC travel to Tivoli Gardens; Humble Lion host Rivoli United, and in the 5:00 pm encounter, Cavalier host the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Stadium East.
Reno, under the guidance of head coach Michael Graham, remain the only unbeaten team in the league after five games and are in second spot on 11 points, just one behind leaders Portmore United.
The surging Montego Bay United are third on 10 points and look ominous after recovering from their opening day defeat to the promoted Portmore United. But with the absence of three key players in Dino Williams, Jermaine Woozencroft and Allan Ottey on international duty with the Reggae Boyz in South Korea, the St James outfit will be significantly weakened and Reno could exploit that.
The Westmoreland standard bearer will be looking towards goalkeeper Ashek Taylor, Rondell Morris, Omar Johnson, Shamar Bernard, Jason McLean, Denmark Gillings, Tyshan Hill, Jashane Foster, Roshane Sharpe and striker Kavar Walker for victory.
Meanwhile, leaders Portmore United, on 12 points, travel to a Boys’ Town outfit down in ninth spot on five points, with the former no doubt aiming to extend their lead atop the standings. They have won four of their five games since returning to top-flight football, and coach Geoffrey Hewitt, should feel confident of win number five today.
Boys’ Town are fresh from an exciting 4-3 win over Rivoli United and coach Andrew Price will be hoping that victory might have kick-started their season.
Another team that kick-started their season was Waterhouse FC and Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson will again lead the charge against Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Stadium.
Only a point separates both teams with Tivoli Gardens sitting in eighth spot on five points, while Waterhouse are 10th with four points.
Of interest will be the battle between the two rugged Andersons in Jermaine of Waterhouse and the no-nonsense Ranike of Tivoli Gardens. Their personal duels are normally a high point when these teams meet.
Fourth-placed Humble Lion, with eight points, host 11th-placed Rivoli United (four points) at Effortville Community Centre in an intriguing match between two hard-running teams.
In the late kick-off at Stadium East, home team Cavalier, in sixth spot on seven points, are fancied to secure three more points against a UWI team at the bottom on three points and struggling to come to grips with life at the top. But they cannot be taken lightly because they are playing better than their results are indicating.
On Monday night, Harbour View, in seventh spot on six points, host champions Arnett Gardens in fifth on seven points at the Compound starting at 8:30 pm.
