Free-scoring Manchester chase record
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The free-scoring Manchester High are four goals away from being the team with the most goals in the first round of the competition in at least the last 10 seasons as they complete their first round schedule in the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition this afternoon.
So far the Donovan Duckey-coached team has racked up 65 goals in nine matches, 20 coming against hapless Winston Jones High on Wednesday as they maintain a perfect win record from nine games so far.
Today they face second-placed DeCarteret College, who they had beaten 2-0 at home in the first round.
While the 20-0 whipping of Winston Jones was the only time they got into double digits this year, Manchester High twice scored nine goals in one game, Belair High the victims on both occasions and got eight in the first round against Winston Jones.
Romario Walsh, with 19 goals, leads Manchester High, while Duhaney Williams is not far behind on 18, a combined total of 37 goals, which is more than any other team has scored in the competition.
In comparison this year, defending champions Clarendon College are the next best team with 30 goals with a game to be played. Both Cornwall College and St Elizabeth Technical have both scored 23 goals so far, but while Cornwall have completed their schedule of six games, STETHS will play one more game for a total of 10.
Dinthill Technical have also scored 22 goals with one to go, DeCarteret College are on 21 and Bog Walk on 20.
The Rusea’s High team that scored 68 goals in the first round in 2011 is the most prolific team in the last decade in a season where six teams scored at last 43 goals in the first round.
St Elizabeth Technical were the most prolific in the first round that season with 64 goals, Clarendon College scored 55, Frome Technical 47, Denbigh High had 44 and Lennon High had 43.
Manchester High’s tally so far this year is more than they have scored in the last three seasons combined — 61 goals and the most in the last decade. They had scored 54 goals in 2009 and 49 the previous season.
Last year, they managed 26 goals after losing points and goals in two games that they used an ineligible player — 17 in the 2013 season; 13 in 2012, 31 in 2011, 49 in 2010, 54 in 2009, 27 in 2008, 12 in 2007 and 14 in 2006.
