Christian man beats wife over money
A Christian man who punched his wife all over her body after she asked him for money to pay for extra lessons for their child was forced to spend two nights in jail after he was remanded for sentencing.
Anderson Lawrence, 41, self-employed of Seaga Boulevard, West Kingston, was remanded on Wednesday by RM Pusey who told him that he needed to spend a night in jail to understand that his attacks on his wife was something criminal.
Lawrence had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and was scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday but the magistrate was absent, as a result his sentencing was delayed until Friday.
On Wednesday when the matter was mentioned the complainant told the court that this was not the first time that he had hit her.
Lawrence then told the court: “I love my wife, but everytime we in an argument is always ’bout money.
“But that is what life is about. Two things always caused an argument, one is money and I won’t tell you what is the other one,” she said.
“Man is the hunter, you can’t beat her because money tight,” she added.
She then asked Lawrence to tell her what the Bible said about wife and he said that husbands are to provide and honour their wives.
But RM Pusey told him that the Bible was very clear on its instruction that husband must love their wives.
“Since you’re a churchman read the book of Timothy — Timothy always talks about bearing each other’s burden and when him say burden him don’t include lick in it,” she instructed Lawrence, while eliciting laughter from the court.
“You cannot get away with it because you do it twice and you is a Man of God. Maybe if you spend a night and realised that what you are doing is criminal you will understand,” she said before Lawrence was remanded.
He was arrested and charged after he allegedly attacked his wife at their home on September 30 and punched her all over her body including her head and face causing pain and swelling.
According to the complainant in her statement, on the night in question she was home with her husband when she asked him to give her money to pay for extra lesson for one of their three children.
Lawrence got upset and answered saying: “As me come home you a ask fi money.”
The complainant reminded him that she had asked him from in the morning.
Lawrence reportedly turned to their daughter and said: “Me ago get a room and leff you mada.”
The complainant replied by saying,:”No problem, me know whey fi do” and left the house.
Lawrence followed her outside and alegedly said: “Hey gal how you have so much chat,” and proceeded to punch her all over her body, the court was told.
The complainant then reported the matter to the police.
