D’Cup champs not concerned by dip in form
CHAPELTON, Clarendon — Zone H of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup competition has taken an interesting twist at the death, with Clarendon College’s place at the top of the group now in serious doubt.
Earlier on in the campaign, the defending champions appeared to be coasting to zone honours with some impressive results, but have since been slowed by consecutive drawn games on the road.
Their latest stalemate, 1-1 at Lennon High, leaves them two points clear at the summit (on 15) but they could still be knocked off the top should Edwin Allen, in second place on 13 points, win their two remaining games.
Victories for the resurgent Edwin Allen side against Thompson Town and Lennon will increase their tally to 19 points, one more than Clarendon College — who have played a game more — can achieve. Failure to win the zone would therefore put Clarendon College in a theoretically tougher inter-zone group.
But despite this uncertainty, coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis does not seem the least perturbed, noting that he is pleased with the overall picture of their season.
“No, we are not concerned,” he said, following Monday’s game in Mocho. “The next game (Thompson Town High) will make us qualify, and at the moment we are still on top.”
He added that, despite the “ups and downs”, he is pleased with his team’s progress seven games into the season. “(The season) has been good,” said Davis. “You have the ups and the downs, but it has been good so far. And I think we are on the right track.”
