Win delights Waterhouse coach, who blasts sluggish start
“IT is good to get the monkey off our backs,” was the choice rhetoric of Coach Calvert Fitzgerald in reacting to Waterhouse’s first win of the new Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season.
Leading marksman Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson hit a brace in the
3-0 triumph over rookies UWI FC at Drewsland on Sunday. Damarley Samuels got the other goal in the 45th minute.
Sidelined national midfielder, Waterhouse’s Romario Campbell, in an act of retaliation against an opponent, was red-carded by referee Veralton Nembhard in time added.
Desperate Waterhouse, keen to fire up their stuttering RSPL season, went at their visitors with a sense of purpose, and after several forays into their opponents’ territory, Anderson struck to put them ahead by climbing above the defence to nod home a free kick.
Samuels, the marauding Waterhouse skipper and defender, finished off a Campbell pass on the stroke of half-time to put Waterhouse 2-0 up.
Anderson got his second of the evening by beating Amal Knight in goal for UWI with a fierce right-footed shot.
The win moved Waterhouse off the bottom of the standings to ninth place and four points.
Before Sunday’s win, Waterhouse had drawn their first game of the season against Rivoli United and lost the next three matches to Portmore United, FC Reno, and Harbour View FC.
“A victory is always a good encouragement for a coach. I am feeling good about the victory, but I am not yet satisfied with the performance of the team [as] we were a bit sluggish and the
co-ordination is not yet where I expect it to be,” said Fitzgerald.
UWI Coach Marcel Gayle, though praising his team for a good effort, said he thought the players “got carried away with youthful exuberance after playing some good football for the first 35 minutes of play”.
