Thomas rallies Boys’ Town for 4-3 win over Rivoli
BOYS’ Town Football Club secured their first victory in the 2015/2016 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) when they came from behind twice to beat 10-man Rivoli United FC 4-3 at Prison Oval yesterday.
With the victory, Boys’ Town moved to five points from five games while Rivoli United remain on four points, also from five games.
Rafiek Thomas led the way for Boys’ Town with a three-timer, in the 45th+1, 73rd and 77th minutes, after Andre Dawson put the team on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute.
For Rivoli United, Cory Burke scored from the penalty spot twice, in the 12th and 55th, while the other goal was scored by Jeremy Nelson in the 14th minute.
Both teams failed to hold on to possession of ball under wet conditions in the early stages. However, it was Rivoli United who found their footing first as they threatened Boys’ Town as early as the eighth minute when Dellon Dixon was left unmarked inside the penalty box, but sent his shot wide of a struggling Kirk Porter in Boys’ Town’s goal.
With accurate passing, Rivoli United once again breached Boys’ Town’s defence through Nelson, but he was brought down in the penalty area by Pierre McPherson in the 12th minute. The lanky Burke then stepped up to convert easily from the spot.
The determination from Rivoli United didn’t stop there as Nelson went by three of Boys’ Town defenders and fired home easily to give the Spanish Town-based team a comfortable 2-0 lead on minute 14.
That goal seemed to have sparked Boys’ Town as they found some life and began to pressure Rivoli United’s goal with some testing shots.
Dawson, after receiving a through pass, pulled one back for his team in the 23rd minute from close range.
Boys’ Town then drew level when Rafiek Thomas converted from the penalty spot in time added in the first half to take the teams level at 2-2 at the break, but with Rivoli United a man down after Captain Fabian Gordon was ejected.
On the resumption, both teams played cautiously as if neither wanted to give up a goal.
Rivoli United then created the first chance when Burke was brought down in the box and he converted easily to give his team a 3-2 lead.
Boys’ Town then went into attack mode, created numerous chances, but failed to convert.
Dividends paid off in the 73rd minute when Thomas tapped home easily from close range to give his team the equaliser.
Boys’ Town then went ahead four minutes later when Thomas grabbed his third from the penalty spot and the fourth for Boys’ Town.
