Clarendon denied early inter-zone spot following stalemate at Lennon
MOCHO, Clarendon — Title holders Clarendon College were denied an early entry to the inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup after they finished 1-1 with Lennon High in a rescheduled Zone H fixture yesterday.
Following a goalless first half, towering central defender Rajay Russell rifled in a low, speculative effort to give Lennon a 54th-minute lead.
The visiting Clarendon College side went all out for the equaliser and were duly rewarded in stoppage time when Reynaldo Richardson drilled in a more impressive shot from the edge of the box.
The second-half substitute, in the right place at the right time, pounced on a loose ball and without hesitation arrowed his shot into the roof of the net.
His coach, Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, said it was a goal worthy of victory. But on this occasion it was only good enough to give the defending champions a share of the points.
They improved their tally to 15 points at the top of zone, but will have to wait until at least their next game to confirm their inter-zone berth.
Lennon, whose Coach Merron Gordon said the draw felt like a defeat, inched to 11 points, but remained two points behind second-placed Edwin Allen.
